Lavender is the New Pink!

During a trip to Europe in 2015, I recall passing by countless (seemingly endless) fields of lavender while driving through the south of France. It was so disheartening not being able to easily pull over and explore (not having an internet connection to see what one’s we could explore or a shoulder on the road where we could safely pull the car off the motorway). So instead I gazed out the car window watching them pass by in the most purfect purple blur (a reminder to do a bit more research next time!).

Luckily for me, Kooroomba Vineyard and Lavender Farm provides the experience of southern France right on Brisbane’s doorstep. Nestled in the Fassifern Valley at Mt Alford, about 60 minutes from Brisbane and 1hr 30 minutes from the Gold Coast, the vineyard feels like a mini European escape.

The property consists of a cellar door, the Kooroomba Restaurant and a small all-things-lavender gift shop. The building overlooks a six hectare vineyard and picturesque lavender fields, with magnificent views of the Scenic Rim mountains. On the day we visited, the scenery was made even more dramatic while we experienced what felt like four seasons in one day. Arriving to blue skies and the sun beaming down on us, we walked along the rows of lavender and watched on as a small group of wallabies slept and bounced among the grapevines. We then settled into a table under the patio as dark rain clouds moved in over the surrounding mountains, with rain soon falling over the farm. It was one of the most beautiful rain showers to watch, ending with a stunning and vivid rainbow that saw everyone letting out ‘ooo’s’ and ‘ahh’s’ (before a few hundred photos were taken).

As the sun came out again we ordered some food to share, with some wonderful wines from the cellar door to wash it down. Not being able to pass up the opportunity to try some lavender ice cream, the gorgeous desert left our group divided (ice cream or soap?) but the day trip absolutely won everybody over.

Kooroomba Vineyards and Lavendar Farm really is the most wonderful day out (especially for families). The scenic rim has so much to offer with lovely food, local wines, artists and wild life to see and explore, this special part of Queensland is absolutely worth a visit!
